100’s of chemicals called phytocannabinoids (derived from a 2ppet word meaning ‘plant’), are simply referred to as cannabinoids. These cannabinoids act on receptors in our brains and bodies by mimicking the effects of the naturally endocannabinoid system in human bodies which affects physical processes such as appetite, sleep, memory, and inflammation to name a few.
THC activates the brain’s reward system by signalling the release of the chemical dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in regulating mood and pleasure. THC causes the ‘high’ feeling that users experience. CBD & THC affect different receptors and CBD typically does not have any of the psychoactive effects associated with THC.
LEGAL ACCESS TO MEDICINAL CANNABIS MEANS GETTING A PRESCRIPTION FROM A DOCTOR. MOST MEDICINAL CANNABIS PRODUCTS ARE UNAPPROVED, WHICH MEANS THE THERAPEUTIC GOODS ADMINISTRATION (TGA) HAS NOT ASSESSED THEM FOR SAFETY, QUALITY OR EFFECTIVENESS. WHERE APPROPRIATE, DOCTORS CAN APPLY TO THE TGA FOR ACCESS AND EXPLAIN WHY THEIR PATIENT NEEDS THE MEDICINE.
